Background

Vietnamese Family Partnership (VFP) is a registered charity. It is governed by a Board of Trustees operating in compliance with the Charity Commission guidance on good governance. The Board is made up of the a group of Trustees and interim Chairperson. The work streams of the Board are: Strategy, Legal, Marketing, Fundraising and Community.

VFP Mission 

To bring together the Vietnamese community and help them to thrive in wider British society. We achieve this through our services: the Vietnamese Language School and the Support and Advice Centre.

Chair of the Board of Trustees

Role Description 

As a small and growing charity, the role of Chair is a crucial one. As a leader and important ambassador for the organisation, you will be expected to work with the Board, the CEO and key charity stakeholders. 

Working with the Board, you are responsible for setting and achieving the VFP strategy, board governance, safeguarding and promoting the brand, reputation and values of the organisation, and ensuring appropriate risk management and financial sustainability. In addition, the Chair is expected to work closely with the CEO in managing stakeholders expectations, as well as with the other Board Officers (Treasurer and Company Secretary) and Committee Members. 

Detailed responsibilities include

  • Leadership and contribution to the Board on strategic direction, policies, goals, targets and evaluation of performance against agreed targets

  • Chair Board meeting and set agenda for discussion 

  • Help set and drive the organisation’s strategy to ensure it pursues its objectives and complies with its governing document, charity law, and other relevant legislation or regulations

  • Work with Treasurer and CEO to ensure financial strategy and management is implemented as per strategy 

  • Support CEO in promoting VFP with main stakeholders including representing VFP and speaking on behalf of the charity at events and engagements, such as our Lunar New Year event and Mid-Autumn Festival and meetings with key stakeholders.

Person Specification 

  • Commitment to the aims and values of VFP 

  • An understanding of the needs of the Vietnamese community in London 

  • Leadership competence and experience 

  • Public speaking  skills

  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship 

  • Willingness to serve for an initial period of three years 

  • Able and willing to devote the necessary time and effort, which could be several hours per week during implementation of work streams

  • Work effectively as a leader and ability to work effectively as  member of a team 

  • Being able to speak Vietnamese is desirable

  • Understand that VFP is a young charity with big ambitions but limited resources

  • Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. 

Time Commitment 

  • Term: expected to be 3 years unless otherwise stated

  • Meetings: every 6 weeks and/or monthly (usually remote)
